Everything seems to work out. 6 hours before departure time Alaa showed up at the hotel with our tickets for our flight to Aswan. We were supposed to ride the overnight train, but I guess it was booked…I think it was actually that if we arrived to Aswan a day earlier we could have the same guide as another family so it saved Alaa money in the long run. Worked out for us too though. 3:30 AM we were on the road to the airport. We arrived at the airport with a guide to find out that there was no flight with our number. As the departure time approached seats were found for us on another flight. We were handed our tickets and told to run. Jessie looked at hers and the name on it said Abrahim. “No problem, no problem, just go!” It all worked out. We asked our guide later and he said that is common. He said, “you just need a boarding pass, the name on it does not matter.”
The next three days will be spent on a boat traveling from Aswan to Luxor. We met our guide Sayed and he is a very nice and calm man. Aswan is a beautiful city and very relaxed, quite the contrast from busy Cairo. We started out the day by visiting the Aswan High Dam. I was really interested in this because when I taught 6th grade the kids wrote a paper on the pros and cons of the dam. It is amazing to think that before the dams were built, the water ran all the way to the pyramids. I also cannot imagine what so many countries would be like if they did not have the water from the Nile.
After the Dam we went by boat to the Island of Feelah. There is a large temple on the island. Up until the 1970’s the temple was actually on a different island but a large part of it was under water. So, in the 70’s the actually moved the entire temple to this island. You should see the size of these rocks that they moved!
We continue to enjoy our guide Sayed. He is riding the boat with us and he will be with us for 3 more days.
